Disembodied knock-offs
You're all embarrassing ... stop.
If Disembodied wasn't as good as they were, you would have ruined them for me by now.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
what bands are you referring to?
everyone bites from someone. if there was no Meshuggah or Machine Head, Disembodied would not have made Heretic. If there was no Sepultura or Bloodlet, 18V would not have made Yesterday Is Time Killed.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
I'm also curious. I can really only think of one band going for this right now.

what's with everyone on disembodied's sack, anyway?

I've been "on their sack" since 1995. As far as the OP's statement goes, I'm not sure what bands are directly trying to bite Disembodied's sound, but there are a lot of bad mosh bands out there now that never would have tuned their guitars down so low if it weren't for Disembodied setting the standard. I even made mention of it back when I was doing the x43x blog:
"And while we're on the subject, I've noticed a large influx of bands lately that are tuning their guitars down to B, or something similar. Please do us all a favor, and break up now. Disembodied knew how to do it correctly, but you just sound like a sad mush of bad chug mosh."
Re: Disembodied knock-offs
i dunno. i thought disembodied was decent. and like diablerie a lot... but thought it was downhill, from there (and loathe heretic).
and thought their shows were ok, but nothing more. maybe it's because they played the infamous show at the stalag with coalesce...
i dunno. just seems really weird to me that around a year-18 months ago, suddenly everyone was on their nuts (after no one really talking about them for years). and stayed on their nuts...
it makes sense NOW, i guess, with the old/new record out... but up until burning fight, i can't comprehend it.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
i always thought that Decontaminate tried to be similar to Disembodied... i think they played in drop A though, which is a step lower than Disembodied (they played in drop B i think right?)
Re: Disembodied knock-offs
Xibalba definitely comes to mind.
Anyways, while no band in that style will ever come close to Disembodied for me, I'd much rather hear bands play that style than hear another Job For A Cowboy knock-off. Originality is overrated anyways (not to mention virtually non-existent).

disembodied plays in drop A, which is lower than B. a lot of oc bands in the 90s played in B and A.
disembodied is now trying to tune lower with special guitars "made from the wood of burned churches"
Re: Disembodied knock-offs
No reason to name names. Its not an issue that needs taken further than a one sentence message board post. I'm not above posting specifics in other issues that I feel are worth it, this just doesn't happen to be one of them.
Jav, I understand completely what you're saying about the influences thing, but its not necessarily what I'm referring to. The point is that you listed AT LEAST two influences in both of your instances (even though both bands obviously had more than just those influences). Taking different influences and melding them together to form your own band is not my beef at all. I'd say that's what 99% of bands are a result of.
It's just obnoxious when you hear bands who have quite obviously been bad tough guy hardcore bands in recently previous incarnations all of a sudden downloading Heretic, not understanding Disembodied at all, and just randomly putting in creeper vocals and guitar squeals. Just cheapens the whole thing, you know? At the very least, it would be more interesting if said bands would go back up the family tree a bit and take influence from Disembodied's influences (or maybe even one generation before that) and perhaps adding in some others of their own choosing.
Point being ... why in the fuck would I EVER want to listen to Disembodied Band Jr and Disembodied Band III when I can just listen to Disembodied? Perhaps I'd want to listen Racetraitor-Disembodied Band (illegitimate third cousin) ... but never Jr and the III.
As for the tuning ... I call bullshit. How It Ends' first album is in fucking G Sharp (before The Acacia Strain and their minion decided to do so) and it sounds perfectly tight. In fact, How It Ends is one of only two bands who challenge Disembodied in the heaviness scale in my eyes (other one being Die My Will). Playing in B standard is not an issue in the slightest. In fact I'd say it will become the new "standard" tuning for this next generation of kids coming up (with A and G sharp becoming the standardized down tuning). Having a problem with new tunings is just being an old man. I personally have a bit more respect for bands who still sound heavy in E standard, but that doesn't mean I think any less of bands who want to experiment with lower tunings. A lot of bands are actually creating their own tunings these days. Orgone (myspace.com/orgoneus) from Pittsburgh comes to mind and are the furthest thing from needing to "break up now".

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
My old band played in drop C#, but after that ended and the influx of bad mosh bands started to take over, we decided to go back to E standard with Unrestrained.

while theyre def. influenced by them i can tell you for a fact the whole foundation and conception for that band comes way way way more from metal bands than it does hardcore bands.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
I was at that Philly Coalesce/ Disembodied show at Stalag! That was sketchy as fuck! I remember some crazy lady off the street coming in and dancing for Coalesce and then some fight breaking out right before the end of the show. When I walked outside there were about a dozen police cars and a bunch of cops telling everyone to get moving. Shit was illllll....
As for bands biting Disembodied.... Korn.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
"some fight?"
hahahaha. that was a brawl turned rumble (after a squatter's dog got stabbed). and the more people that went outside to fight/watch, the more pissed coalesce seemed to get/way fucking crazier they played. i just remember seeing a considerable amount of blood during their set...
we were in the perfect spot - with vantage points over the fight inside/rumble outside, and coalesce.
glad you were there, though.

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
Haha, oh man, it seems every time I used to go down to Philly for a show back then there was always some trouble brewing.
Honestly, that whole set I was right near the front and fixated on Coalesce, as well as the crazy lady.
On the drive back home I got a flat tire. Had to put the spare on and while I tried to sleep I was telling my friend he couldn't go over 55. But every few minutes I kept getting woken up and he was doing 80. My alignment was fucked after getting back to Syracuse...

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
that sucks.
and yeah, that's pretty much what ruined the scene here. fights kept breaking out, and the venues would either be shut down or stopped having hc shows.
kids really take that shit for granted today, too. "shows" are often drunken parties with bands, basically (with exception of the church and a few others). and it's only a matter of time before the venues are dead because of it...

Re: Disembodied knock-offs
I was going to say that in the last 5 years or so every time I've gone to Philly to see or play a show it's always been a great time. Things seem to have really turned around insofar as fighting goes and I think it's definitely one of my favorite bigger cities to go see a show these days.
Re: Disembodied knock-offs
not really sure what exactly is going on in this thread so i may be a bit off-topic but it's kinda disheartening that the hype for the comp and prospect and excitement of what's to come from Disembodied isn't off the scale i can't even remember the last time i was so sincerely excited for a band. being such a big fan maybe i'm just biased idk.
